​​​​Deep renovation with transformation of historic building (national monument) to dwellings in Tilburg, the Netherlands

The project stopped however mid 2018 due to the fact that the current building owner does not want to proceed with this renovation plan at this moment. Therefore, within P2Endure, this demonstration case is treated as a virtual demonstrator. P2Endure linking partner: PAN+



T​​he former Lidwina Mondastery building is a listed national monument with high historical value and under strict regulations. It is located at a strategic urban site, close to the city centre of Tilburg. Nowadays the building is used as a  temporary housing for immigrant workers.. The building is privately owned. It will be transformed into housing units. There is an urgent need for a new financial exploitation model; and therefore, the transformation into housing. This project has important replication potential for energy performance improvement of historic buildings. Currently the building’s energy performance is very low. Prerequisite for a successful transformation is a significant reduction of energy costs. The performance target after deep renovation is zero-energy on the meter on yearly basis, or equal to a reduction of 3.517 GJ/year.

​Prefab renovation solutions are intended for the integrated technical, sanitary and kitchen spaces. Prefab renovation should reduce renovation time and increase the impact on building interior. Heating/ electricity is through collective pellet stove. Floor insulation, fire resistance and sound insulation through an integrated innovative flooring solution. The prefab renovation cost for each dwelling unit is est. at EUR 150.000 euro. This is considerably less (30-40%) than traditional renovation solutions. The renovation project duration will be 12 months, the internal renovation per dwelling likely takes 7 days. This is considerably less than traditional renovation of monumental buildings.
